Do you believe in miracles? A recent Gallup poll states that 83% of Americans do. Yet we create so many personal boundaries that we often overlook the miracles in front of us. Author Marilyn Gibson reached her conclusion after personal awakenings that included a Near-Death Experience, a faith healing off the dialysis machine, and three other returns from the dead.
Her premise is that physical and mental health is our birthright. Often, through a culture that equates busyness with success, the urge to aquire possessions and external rewards results in physical depletion which can lead to chronic disease or a "withered soul".
In Gibson's case, the drive required to succeed in a highly competitive profession resulted in a diagnosis of a chronic, supposedly incurable disease. Her mother, also a musician, struggled with the same condition. Slowly, inexorably, Gibson watched her mother succumb to her condition. Feeling helpless to save her, she vowed that her mother's situation would not be a mirror for her own.
In her latest book, Hanging by a String, Gibson recounts the events that led to her soul-development journey. Unwilling to accept the doctors' assessment of her progressive deterioration, she was forced to re-evaluate her priorities. She emerged with a changed perspective on the individual soul's journey in life.
"It is only when we slow down long enough to realize our inner imperatives that we are better able to serve others," she states.
Gibson shares this message through her personal quest, one that often involved forcing herself to challenge the beliefs with which she was raised. "It is often through the deepest soul-searching, the most trying circumstances, that we realize what we are here to do," she says.
Yet the author consistently advocates a balance between the serious and the lighter matters in life. "By maintaining a grateful heart and laughing at our inadequacies, we are able to handle our lives with grace and joy."
Soul development, according to Gibson, is a lifetime process. Yet it is never too late to begin the journey. She summarizes her philosophy this way: "One doesn't need to flirt with death to realize that our lives are a precious gift. Yet that proximity can give us the wisdom to stop and nurture our souls. In doing this, we find that everything we achieve can have greater meaning."
