MARILYN GIBSON

 

MARILYN GIBSON, Violinist, received her Master's Degree from the Manhattan School of Music where she was Concertmaster of the orchestra.  Undergraduate work was completed at East Carolina University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and a member of the scholastic fraternity Phi Kappa Phi.

 

Ms. Gibson recorded for the  Iceland National Radio in Reykjjavik and performed in recital for the United States Information Service.   As a chamber musician, she coached with her string quartet which was provided with a special fellowship from the Manhattan School of Music to study with Lillian Fuchs.  She also participated in the Cleveland School of Music Christmas Seminar, working with the Guarneri Quartet.  As a founding member of the Manhattan Quintet, she debuted at Carnegie Recital Hall.  She was a guest artist for the All Seasons Chamber Ensemble for their '95-'96 season.    She has recorded chamber music for Classic Masters and Vienna Modern Masters.

As a professional orchestral player she has participated in the Iceland Symphony, the Colorado Music Festival, the Opera Orchestra of New York, the Queens Symphony Orchestra, the Colonial Symphony, the New Orchestra of Westchester, the American Ballet Theater, the BrooklynPhilharmonic, the Scandia Symphony, the Westfield Symphony and the New Jersey Philharmonic.  She is currently performing on Broadway in "Phantom of the Opera" and Les Miserables.  Ms. Gibson has served as Concertmaster of several groups, including Continuum, the St. Cecelia Orchestra, the Westchester Opera, Opera Northeast, and the Glimmerglass Opera.  Concert broadcasts include the Iceland National Radio, WQXR'S Listening Room,  and the North Carolina Educational Television Station in a performance of "L'Histoire du Soldat".She has appeared as concerto soloist with the North Shore Orchestra, the C. W. Post Orchestra, and Continuum, at Alice Tully Hall. As solo violinist she performed in the Off-Broadway Musical The Transposed Heads at Lincoln Center.  Her contemporary associations have included the Group for Contemporary Music, Musical Elements, Newband, and North-South Consonance.  She has collaborated with such composers as Bernard Rands, Charles Wuorinen, Raoul Pleskow, Elliot Goldenthal and Joshua Rosenblum.  

Ms. Gibson studied with Paul Topper, Paul Zukofsky, Lillian Fuchs, Carroll Glenn, Fredell Lack, and Joyce Robbins, as well as attending the Master Class of Nathan Milstein.

 

Ms. Gibson has written Soul Songs, a book of poetry and The Light Messengers: Summoning Michael.  Her second book, a memoir entitled Hanging by a String, is now available. Visit her website Hangingbyastring.com
